Keakealani Campus

Since opening Volcano’s only charter school in 2001, maintaining an adequate and safe facility has been a major challenge for VSAS. The school is restricted by an expired lease, tents, and shared classrooms. Restrictions on the current lease make it impossible to realize the school’s dream for a comprehensive campus at its current location.
Volcano School now has the opportunity to create a permanent campus at Keakealani on Haunani Rd., thus restoring the original intent of the Lee Family’s donation of this land in 1914 as a school for the children of Volcano, Hawaii. Sixth through 8th grades started classes this Fall 2011 in the historic 4-room school house. Construction of additional classrooms is needed before the remaining elementary school and administrative staff can move from its current location to the new site at Keakealani.
Volcano School believes it is important to create a campus that is environmentally responsible and blends in with the history and look of Volcano Village. Volcano School would like Keakealani to have the same intimate feel of its current location with adequate classroom space for regular classroom teachers as well as specials/electives teachers and space for visiting resource teachers, meetings, and office staff.
The Future of Volcano School at Keakealani
The middle school currently occupies the site’s existing building. The remainder of the campus must be built before elementary and administration can join the middle-school at the Keakealani site.
Construction will begin on a new driveway and other necessities for occupation of the existing building as funding allows. The goal at this time is to create a fully operating campus for grades K-8 at Keakealani in the next five years.
The Volcano School of Arts and Sciences relies on the support of its community, parents, volunteers, and legislators to see the Keakealani vision become reality. Students, staff, and our Local and Non-profit Boards look forward to the journey ahead to achieve the goals of Volcano’s Keakealani Campus.
